         Урок на тему: "Explorers of the South Pole." (9 класс) 
     
 Goals:  
-         -  To brush up students’ knowledge  in the area of geography and history.
-        -  To practice listening and speaking skills about the great historical discoveries on the basic of a presentation and a video episode.
-         - To practice speaking in groups/pairs, to learn s-s the co-operative work.
To learn s-s   make a conclusion and express their opinions.  



Procedure
1. Warm-up.
Dear children and colleagues,
Today we’d like to have an unusual lesson. We have decided to combine several school subjects: Geography, History and English language as the topic “Explorers of the South Pole” is connected with these subjects. So the topic of our lesson is “Explorers of the South Pole”. (slide 1) 
To start our lesson, I would like to ask you
 what discoverers or pioneers you know and what they discovered? (The students’ answers)   (3 min)


2. Main part. 
1.  Now I’d like to give a floor to the History teacher, so that he can systematize and supplement information.       (A. A.’s presentation with a map) 
Checking s-s understanding. (What countries, names were mentioned what did these people do?)     (s-s answers)     (5 min)

2.   Now who can name (tell) what was one of the recent great geographical discoveries? (s-s – the discovery of the South Pole)
-         Who were these people? (Amundsen and Scott) (slide  2)
-         What do you know about them?   (s-s tell what they read from their books)
(What is Antarctica, the polar summer? What weather conditions are there?) (5 min)


3. Next activity will be a short video story illustrating that discovery – the discovery of the South Pole.  (slide 3 )
Your task will be to answer some questions while watching the video story. Have a look at the slide. You can work in pairs to help each other to answer them.  (distribute tasks 1)







1. S-s are watching the video story and answering the questions.     (5 min)
2. We are discussing them.  
 Checking. (3 -4 min)



4.  Let’s give the history teacher a word to add interesting facts about this discovery.  
     (2-3 min)
         5. Now we’d like to check how well you know Amundsen’s and Scott’s stories. (slide 3)

-    You need to choose the best option a, b, c.  (distribute tasks 2) You can work in pairs. (1-2 min)    Checking.


      
   
         6. Discussion.  Let’s work in groups and discuss some questions.   (Slide 4) One group – one question   ( 2 min)

       7.( The quote. Discussion as a whole class. The main thing is just to go.)
8. Conclusion.
a. Your culture: What explorers, climbers or travelers do you know in your country? What have they done? (3 min)
       b. feedback  1. What sense/role do discoveries have/play in people’s lives?
          2. What do people risk their lives for? (2 min)

Homework: to write the story of the South Pole exploration.
